Will More Teens Become Entrepreneurs?

Posted on 11 August 2010

It has been said that there is nothing better than being your own boss. I could not agree more. Entrepreneurs can have freedoms that employees will never have the chance to experience. America was built on the concept of small business, and this is something that the youth of today needs to embrace. The current economic climate may be helping this situation.

AOL Small Business is reporting that as of June, teen unemployment rates reached 29 percent, which may lead many teenagers to abandon the thought of taking the traditional mall job route of employment and instead try their hand at being an entrepreneur.

Being a small business owner is not for everyone. The world needs both entrepreneurs and employees. I personally think the former is far superior to the latter, but there are many that just aren’t cut out to be their own boss. I do think that everyone owes it to themselves to have a go at entrepreneurship, to see if it is the right direction for them.

What better time to explore being your own boss than when you are a teenager. You are at the age where you don’t think twice about taking risk, and since you usually don’t have a family to support, there is less on the line. If you start at an early age, you might just find that being a small business owner is what you want to do with your life. This would allow you to start when you are young, build up your business, and have a very good chance of reaching a high level of success early enough in life to really be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

What is the worse thing that can happen if teenagers try being their own boss? They discover, at an early age, that they don’t have what it takes to strike out on their own and then devote their energy to figuring out what type of employee they want to be. I certainly wished I started being an entrepreneur much earlier in life, but unfortunately, I wasn’t encouraged to do so.

If you are a teenager, think outside of the box and figure out how to try your hand and being your own boss. If you are a parent or mentor, encourage teenagers to explore being an entrepreneur as an employment option, instead of pushing them to being employees.
