Rudeness In The Workplace

Posted on 4 August 2010

I love working for myself. I would have it no other way. I have worked more years for the man than I care to remember, most of the time for bosses that lacked certain skills, shall we say. In my unscientific, non-polling opinion, I firmly believe that most people do not have the necessary people skills in order to be an effective leader. Put simply, most managers have no business being managers, and as such, do a horrible job leading. It is in the way you interact with people – the way you deliver the message.

Inc has a recent article that talks about a study done in the British Medical Journal relating to how people perform when confronted with rudeness. No surprise here, the report says that the way people are treated is directly related to their performance.

How many times have you been faced with a boss, or even a colleague, that is just plain rude to you? Their delivery sucks and their message is one of disgust rather than nurture. How did it make you feel? Did you rush off and have a long period of great productivity, or did you fret and stew and wish evil things upon your boss? If I were a betting man, I would place my money on the later rather than the former. It would take a ‘special’ type of person that can excel when being assailed.

The British Medical Journal study looked at a group of students that witnessed terse comments by a group leader and then went on to perform poorly in a memory test when compared to a control group that did not witness the interchange. This implies that even if you are not directly involved in rude or unpleasant behavior, you still can be affected. Nice.

Most people don’t have any choice but to deal with rudeness and tension in the workplace. After all, there is a mortgage to pay and a family to support. I have had enough of rudeness in the workplace and therefore I no longer work for the man. It has very clearly come to me that I am not meant to be an employee and do much better being the boss. Being an entrepreneur is how I avoid workplace conflicts.
