Be Happy – Be An Entrepreneur

Posted on 25 August 2010

It is no secret – most people dislike their jobs, and given the choice (which, in theory, most do have), they would be doing something different for employment. For many people, being their own boss is the key to happiness, and yet another survey backs this up.

TD Bank has recently come out with their survey that indicates that owning a small business may just be the key to happiness. TD Bank surveyed American and Canadian small business owners to find out how happy they are. Of course, considering they only surveyed people who currently are entrepreneurs, this study just shows the level of happiness for business, not those that still work for the man.

According to the survey, 69 percent of American entrepreneurs describe themselves as being very happy, which is no surprise to us. There is nothing better than being your own boss, and this survey supports this belief. Overall, Canadian entrepreneurs are slightly less happy, with 62 percent stating that they would describe themselves as being very happy.

There are some very good reasons that most entrepreneurs are very happy, such as:

  1. They are their own boss.
  2. They can set their own schedule.
  3. They are in control.

Of course, there is no such thing as a free ride. With the positives of being an entrepreneur, there are some drawbacks, including:

  1. Managing budgets and cash flow.
  2. Stress of being the person in control.
  3. Long hours and not much time off.

However, speaking from experience, while the above negatives certainly do exist, they are a small price to pay to not be an employee. Working for someone else brings the entrepreneurial type nothing but grief. Some people are made to be employees, and the rest of us are made to be our own boss.

Surveys like this are interesting to watch, though they don’t tell you how happy entrepreneurs are compared to the rest of the population. For example, the above study says that 69 percent of American small business owners claim to be very happy, but what if 75 percent of the general population claimed to be very happy? Then you might be better of working for the man rather than being the man. I don’t think so, but these are the types of questions that are raised when a survey only addresses part of the story.
